How to Break the Cycle of Pain: The Fifth Beatitude Explained

In this episode of the Beatitudes Series, Inés Franklin teaches on what it means to be merciful in the way Jesus describes — not soft, not passive, but deeply strong and transformative.

Mercy is a central theme throughout Scripture. It reflects God’s covenant love (“hesed”) — compassionate, gracious, faithful love. When Jesus says, “Blessed are the merciful,” He is inviting us into the very character of God.

Mercy has two dimensions:

  • Forgiveness — releasing the punishment someone “deserves” and entrusting justice to God

  • Proactive kindness — extending compassion and generosity to those in need

Mercy is not excusing abuse or denying harm. It is absorbing pain without perpetuating it. It is breaking cycles of retaliation and resentment.

As we receive God’s mercy in Christ — remembering the cost of the cross — we are empowered to extend mercy to others. And in doing so, we experience God’s mercy more deeply in our own lives.
